CBT 1: what to expect
CBT 1 is a screening test of 100 questions in 90 minutes (120 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe). One-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer. It is common to all branches, so your engineering subject does not matter yet. It only decides who moves on to CBT 2, the technical, post-specific paper that sets final merit.
- Your exam city slip usually comes about 10 days before the exam, and the e-call letter about 4 days before, on your RRB's website. Check both for your shift and reporting time.
- Carry the printed e-call letter and an original photo ID whose name matches your application exactly.
- Arrive well before gate closing. Biometric and photo capture at the centre take time.
Last-week preparation
With the negative marking at one-third, accuracy matters more than attempts. In the final days, take full-length mocks under the 90-minute limit and go through your errors in Mathematics and Reasoning. These sections are the most score-sensitive in screening tests. Skip questions you cannot narrow down to two options.
About your fee refund
RRB JE refunds are tied to attendance. If you sit CBT 1, general candidates get ₹400 of the ₹500 fee back. SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, women, transgender, minority and EBC candidates get their full ₹250 back, less bank charges. The refund goes to the bank account you entered in the form, so check it if you haven't already.
After CBT 1
Expect a provisional answer key with an objection window a few days after the exam, then the CBT 1 result with the list of candidates called for CBT 2. Shortlisted candidates finally go through document verification and a medical examination. We will update this page as each notice is issued. You can also follow the RRB websites directly.
